Daveport, Roddick, Hewitt advance in Australian Open

CANBERRA, Jan. 18 (Xinhuanet) -- Lindsay Davenport, Andy Roddick on Tuesday advanced to the second round of the Australian Open in Melbourne.

 

 Davenport, women's world No. 1, beat former Wimbledon champion Conchita Martinez by 6-1 6-0.

 

    The 28-year-old had to pull out of last week's lead-up event inSydney due to bronchitis. But she showed no sign of illness in Tuesday's match, which is the most one-sided win of the completed first-round matches at this year's tournament.

 

    Davenport lost eight times to Martinez in 15 previous career meetings.

 

    Davenport will play Czech Michaela Pastikova on Thursday for a place in the last 32.

 

    Earlier in the day, Andy Roddick of the United States beat Irakli Labadze of Georgia by 7-5 6-2 6-1.

 

    The second-seeded American thumped down one serve at 226km/hr and regularly peppered Labadze with several others in the region of 210km/hr.

 

    Asked what he thinks about the court which Australia's Lleyton Hewitt blamed as too slow, Roddick said "I'm never one to really notice too much."

    Australia's Lleyton Hewitt also advanced into the second round,beating Arnaud Clement of France 6-3, 6-4, 6-1.

 

    The No.3 seed had been very vocal in his criticism of Rod LaverArena's surface in the lead-up to this tournament but appeared comfortable in his downing of Clement.

 

    Hewitt has criticised the slow court of Rod Laver Arena but appeared comfortable in today's match.

 

    Seven-seeded Venus Williams beat Greek Eleni Daniilidou 6-1, 7-5, joining sister Serena in the next round.

 

    Williams's opponent in the second round will be Peng Shuai of China.

 

    The elder of the Williams sisters, former world No. 1 and now ranked No.10 in the world, has not won a grand slam singles title since the 2001 US Open.

 

    Australia's 10th seed Alicia Molik beat Anabel Garrigues of Spain 6-1, 6-3 in 71 minutes in the second day of Australian Open in Melbourne, advancing into the second round.

 

    Molik, 23, lost only one set in nine matches this year. Garrigues, world No.38, was the highest-ranked player not seeded in the women's draw.
