Photos: Han Opera to pass on

(2005-03-04 15:38:18)

Bi Weiran is on the stage, giving perfomance.

Bi Weiran goes regularly to the ward of Tongji Hospital in Wuhan, capital of central China's Hubei Province to learn after her coach, famous artist Chen Bohua.

(cnhubei.com) Bi Weiran, a 20-year-old Wuhan girl, has practiced Han Opera for over eight years. She is the last pupil of Chen Bohua, one of the most famous Han Opera artists.

Han opera, originated from central China’s Hubei Province, is one of the most ancient local operas in China with a history of more than 300 years.

Several Han Opera troupes in Hubei have been disbanded or incorporated into other troupes in the past few years, due to shrinking market demands. But Bi still persists.

Experts recently planed to seek World Heritage status from the United Nations in a bid to protect Han opera from extinction.

Empty chairs witnessed shrink of Han Opera, but people as Bi Weiran can inherit the branch of brilliant Chinese Culture as well as Hubei culture.
