In 1902, seven years before the collapse of Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), Zhang Zhidong, governor of Hubei, Hunan, Guangdong and Guangxi provinces, started to reform the educational system.
The Experimental Kindergarten of Hubei Province, the first of its kind in China was established in 1903 in Yuemachang of Wuchang district of Wuhan, capital city of the province.
The employed 3 Japanese nurses to take care of the kids.
The first group of children the kindergarten recruited were 80 girls aged 5-6 and graduated on year after.
The aim of the kindergarten was to cultivate the kids and lie a solid foundation for their future studies instead of teaching them knowledge.
As tendencies at that time in society couldn’t accept the kindergarten, only poor families sent their kids to it.
