Hanyang Iron Plant, largest in Asia, starts construction

Zhang Zhidong presented a memorial to the emperor to transfer the equipment he ordered from UK to build iron plant to Hubei from Guangzhou in February 1890. Hubei Mining Bureau was set up in Wuchang in May with Lai Xiyong as the general officer.

Hanyang Iron Plant started construction in September 1890 and completed in October 1893. It was divided into ten factories with 60 foreign engineers and 3, 000 workers.

Meantime, Daye iron ore, Daye Wang Sanshi coal mine and Jiangxia Maanshan coal mine started construction.

Hubei Arsenal set up in Hanyang

Guangzhou Firearms Plant was approved to move to Hubei on March 19 and the site of the plant was set to the foot of Guishan Mountain in Hanyang.

Hubei Firearms Plant started construction in 1892 and was renamed as Hubei Arsenal in 1904 and Hanyang Arsenal in 1908.

Hubei Arsenal is China's first well -equipped arsenal and firearms and guns it manufactured were the most advanced in the country.

Weaving and Spinning Official Bureau moved to Wuchang

Zhang Zhidong presented a memorial to the emperor to move the Weaving and Spinning Official Bureau to Wuhan to Guangzhou and Hubei Weaving Bureau was established. The weaving plant began construction in 1891.

The yarn put into production on November 20, 1982 and the cloth plant in January 1893 with daily output of 5,000 kilograms of yarn and 600 meters of cloth respectively, marking the beginning of Wuhan’s modern textile.

Establishment of Lianghu Academy

Lianghu Academy (Hubei and Hunan) was founded in Wuhan in June, 1890 by Zhang Zhidong. Six courses were established as Confucian studies, history, philosophy, literature, mathematics and economics.

Lianghu Academy started modern education in Hubei.

Buddhist monk Daoming donates to expand temple

Buddhist monk Daoming donated money to expand Lianxi temple and to add statues in 1890, making it a new temple at the time.
