Photos: Lanterns in Hubei for Lantern Festival

(2006-02-12 19:11:28)

(english.cnhubei.com) As the Lantern Festival is approaching, citizens in central China’s Hubei Provinces held various kinds of activities to celebrate the festival.

Walking on stilts and dragon lantern dance are traditional performance in the Lantern Festival.

The most important activity for Lantern Festival is watching lanterns. The beautiful lanterns in Wuhan, capital city of central China’s Hubei Province have attracted many local citizens.

Watching lanterns can date back to Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 220) when Buddhism flourished in China. One emperor heard that Buddhist monks would watch sarira, or remains from the cremation of Buddha's body, and light lanterns to worship Buddha on the 15th day of the 1st lunar month, so he ordered to light lanterns in the imperial palace and temples to show respect to Buddha on this day.
