A new urban farming lifestyle is emerging at the Wuhan Flower Gallery (also known as Huabohui) in Caidian District. When Mr. Song, 57, and his wife worked with hoes in their own personal vegetable garden at the gallery, a harvest of carrots was soon dug out of the soil.

"More and more people have appreciated this way of life," said Xiao Jian, the operations director of the Wuhan Huabohui Urban Agricultural Park. He said that since the park opened on March 20, 2021, coming here to grow vegetables has become another leisure activity for many urban dwellers, and even a new way of life for some.

Up to now, 117 vegetable plots have been leased. For only RMB 2,580 a year, people get a 30-square-meter patch, a sack of organic fertilizer, and 100 tomato, pumpkin, eggplant, and bell pepper seedlings.

Unlike ordinary vegetable gardens, each patch, marked with its owner's number, is equipped with a 5G camera and an intelligent irrigation system. Sitting at home, these urban farmers can check the growth of vegetables in their patch through a mobile app at any time. If the ground is found to be dry, they just need to click a button to initiate remote watering and fertilization.
