Hubei's writers play an important part in Chinese contemporary literature. Li Zicheng, a historical novel written by Yao Xueyin, and New War and Peace by Li Erzhong, are regarded as masterpieces of Chinese contemporary novels. Besides, Xu Chi's two reportages Goldbach's Conjecture and The Light of Geology, and Bi Ye's famous essay Scenery of Tianshan Mountain are used as model essays in high school textbooks.

 

In Hubei Province there are over 20 local operas, including Han opera, Jingzhou flower-drum opera, Chu opera, Huangmei opera, Tea-picking opera, and Nan opera, with Han opera and Chu opera being popular across the whole province.

 

Known as one of the sources of Beijing opera, the 300-year-old Han opera is a major local opera with an especially rich touch of regional culture. It has a complete set of characters and is very expressive. Chu opera is characterized by its plain language and its heavy rural touch. Originated at the turn of the Ming and Qing dynasties, Huangmei opera is extremely influential with its wide variety of arias.

 

Hubei also boasts its singing and talking art which is represented by Hubei Dagu (like tom-tom), Hubei storytelling, Hantan ditty and Hanchuan storytelling. Accompanied mainly by the clapper, Hubei Dagu is mostly a singing art with some interludes of talking. The actor sings and talks while beating the clapper. It is popular, funny and easy to understand.

 

 Hubei is also very influential in the fields of music, dance, acrobatics, movies and TV programs, photography, as well as calligraphy. The following are national and international awards winners: musicals -- "Honghu Lake Red Guards", "Chime Bells Dance", "Country Fellows", symphony - "Three Gorges Sketch", songs - "Love from a Boat Tracker",and "18 Turns of the Mountain Road", movie - "Dream of the Century", TV series - "Hanzheng Street", and finally, acrobatics - "Carrying Bowls on Head", and "Piles on Piles of Chairs".

 

Wuhan acrobatics enjoys a high reputation both at home and abroad. Wuhan Acrobatics Hall has become an attractive spot for international acrobatics, where a world-scale acrobatics festival is held every year.

 

Hubei is titled as "Home of Folk Art" by the Ministry of Culture for there are as many as 11 counties and cities whose folk art poses influence across the country. Namely, folk song and dance in Changyang County, folk print in Yichang County, the ensemble of wind and percussion in Zhijiang City, Huangmei opera in Huangmei County, Tiqin opera in Chongyang County, folk cartoon in Anlu City, peasant drawings in Huangzhou District, stone carving in Bao'an Town, Daye City, folk stories in Wujiagou, Danjiangkou City, folk stories in Guandu Town, Zhushan County, and folk stories in Yidu City.

 

Remarkable achievements have been made in the field of TV and broadcasting. The provincial coverage of TV and broadcasting has reached as much as 90%, as a result of the completion of the so-called "project to link all the villages".

 

  Hubei has also seen fast development in terms of news and publication. Hubei now owns 13 publishing houses. With over 100 newspapers and over 400 periodicals, a network of publishing industry has taken shape, which deals in books, newspapers, periodicals, audio-video products and electronic publications. The major media companies include Hubei Daily Group, Hubei Broadcasting and TV Group, Zhiyin Group and Changjiang Daily Group.
